WOONSOCKET, R.I. -- The former top National Guard official in Rhode Island is calling on the military, religious leaders and everyday Rhode Islanders to stand up for a war memorial in the parking lot of the Woonsocket Fire Department.

"This is the line in the sand as far as I'm concerned," said Lt. Gen. Reginald Centracchio, state adjutant general for 10 years.
The Freedom from Religion Foundation has complained that the monument, which displays a cross, is an illegal religious symbol on city property.
Centracchio believes the controversy is less about the separation of church and state than protecting veterans' rights to be buried and memorialized the way they see fit.
He plans a rally in front of the memorial Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
